About Me

My Running Speed - Slow, but working on it. . .

Denise running Portland MarathonThere has been a race here and there, that I came in last.  Being last isn’t all bad.  I have found that I often meet more people and see more scenery than Robert does in the same race.  I mean I didn’t come in ‘hours’ last, just a few minutes within everybody else.  I have also been second last, and third last and so on.  Interestingly, this is directly opposite my husband, who has often been 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  Although our placements are variable, this situation has helped to define my goals.

This is the most accurate way for me to calculate the amount of time it should take for me to complete a race we are both running in.  I take Robert's estimated finish time and double it.  For example, his 10k PR is 31:35.  That  makes a very reasonable, non pressure 10k goal for me, of 63:10.  You can see what a good system this is for reducing stress.  This works especially well for marathons and longer races.  This does not work for 3k or shorter.  Robert's speed can increase with the shorter distance, mine does not!
